Summary of The Snake and the Mirror :

The homeopath doctor shared a surprising story about a night when a snake visited him. After a long day and feeling restless, the doctor sat in his room, admiring his appearance in the mirror and imagining his future. Suddenly, he was startled by a snake that slid down his shoulder and coiled around his arm. Despite the danger, he remained very still, feeling like a statue while the snake looked at its reflection in the mirror. Eventually, the snake moved away, allowing the doctor to escape to safety. The next day, he found that most of his belongings had been stolen, but the thief had left behind his dirty vest. The doctor humorously noted that the snake seemed to be admiring itself, which is why it never bothered him again.

Class 9 English | Chapter- 5 |The Snake and the Mirror |A Legend of the Northland

A Legend of the Northland :

In a faraway, snowy land where winter nights are very long, there’s a story about a woman and Saint Peter. One day, Saint Peter, who was wandering the earth and preaching, visited a cottage where a woman was baking cakes. He asked for a piece of cake because he was hungry. The woman, however, couldn’t bear to give him any of her cakes, even though they seemed too small to her. She kept making smaller and smaller cakes, but none were small enough for her to give away. Annoyed by her selfishness, Saint Peter punished her by turning her into a woodpecker. Now, she spends her days pecking at trees for food, wearing a red cap and blackened clothes from the fire.

Explanation :

This poem is a legend from the Northland, where the days are short and the winters are long.
