Articles

Articles are small words that we use before nouns to give us more information about them. They help us understand if we are talking about something specific or something more general. There are two kinds of articles: indefinite and definite.

Indefinite Article

The indefinite articles are "a" and "an." We use these when we’re talking about something in a general way or introducing something new.

  • "A" is used before words that start with a consonant sound. For example:

    • "I saw a bird in the garden." Here, "a" tells us that we’re talking about any bird, not a particular one.

  • "An" is used before words that start with a vowel sound. For example:

    • "She bought an orange." In this case, "an" is used because "orange" starts with a vowel sound, indicating that we’re talking about any orange, not a specific one.

Examples :

  • A cat wandered into the garden.

  • She bought an apple from the market.

  • A book fell off the shelf.

  • I need an umbrella because it’s raining.

  • He wants to adopt a puppy from the shelter.

  • An interesting idea was proposed at the meeting.

  • She found a coin in the park.

  • An expert will give a lecture tomorrow.

  • They saw a movie last night.

  • A new restaurant opened near our house

Definite Article

The definite article is "the." It is used when we are referring to a specific thing that both the speaker and listener know about.

  • For example:

    • "The book on the table is mine." Here, "the" specifies which book and table we are talking about, as both are known to both people involved in the conversation.

Articles help us be clear about whether we’re speaking about something particular or something more general, making our communication more precise.

Examples :

  • The cat is sleeping on the sofa.

  • She handed me the book you recommended.

  • The sun sets in the west.

  • I’ll meet you at the park near the library.

  • The cookies on the counter smell delicious.

  • The teacher explained the lesson clearly.

  • We visited the museum in the city center.

  • The movie we watched last night was fantastic.

  • He fixed the leaky faucet in the kitchen.

  • The concert starts at the auditorium downtown.
